The 20x24 Studio has announced that they will be discontinuing operations at the end of 2017. They have been producing images with film stock purchased from Polaroid in 2008.
This film has been lovingly cared for, the negative in cold storage, the positive paper stored in a climate controlled warehouse and the chemicals mixed as demand dictates. Still the material is aging and will exhibit minor artifacts around the edges and occasionally in the image.
Many artists consider these to be special characteristics of the format and distinguish it from the sterile perfection of digital capture and printing. The result is unique, one of a kind and a special part of photographic history.
The Polaroid 20×24 camera stands apart from all other large format experiences because it delivers an instant finished photograph. The artist is able to react to the subject matter in a manner unlike any other photographic experience.
Digital technology may rival it in resolution and instant playback but it cannot match the experience of having the final complete artwork on the wall in ninety seconds for all to see.
The camera has been celebrated and used by artists including Chuck Close, Elsa Dorfman, Robert Rauschenberg, Joyce Tenneson, William Wegman and many others.
